History

For this kusudama, I didn't use any pre-existing module as a basis.

When I am reading a book, I tend to fiddle with the paper I use for my bookmark. In this case, it happened to be a square sticky note, 3 inches wide. My random folds led me to make a 6 by 6 grid on the paper, and eventually some diagonal folds, creating a sort of pinwheel shape. (By now, as you can imagine, I had lost all interest in the book.)

I made two of these pieces to see if they fit together. Finding a way to connect the pieces was pretty easy since there were pockets already built into the shape, but since the tabs were a little smaller than that of a sonobe, actually connecting the pieces was easier said than done, but once I had completed the task, the structure held together very sturdily.

The triangular wings on the outside of the kusudama refused to stay in identical positions, which is why I called it the bad hair day kusudama.

The final product used 30 sheets of square paper, with a different color on the back. (I used Tuttle paper for this one.)

Disclaimer: the size of the paper that can be used isn't limited to the sizes I used! As long as the paper is square, it will work. Just make sure to choose a paper size that you are comfortable folding with!
